2D-HEC-RAS Modeling of Flood Wave Propagation in a Semi-Arid Area Due to Dam Overtopping Failure

Dam overtopping failure and the resulting floods are hazardous events that highly impact inundated areas less predictable. The simulation of dam breach flood wave propagation is necessary for assessing hazards to provide precautions. In present study, a two-dimensional HEC-RAS model was used simulate from hypothetical Al-Udhaim on River, Iraq, dam-break along 100 km downstream site scenario. main objective analyze so risk can be assessed emergency plans may provided. methodology consisted two sub-models: first deriving hydrograph, second hydrodynamic propagating dam. hydrograph as an upstream boundary condition derive in reach Al- Udhaim River. inundation maps were visualized RAS-Mapper terms water surface elevation, depth, flow velocity, arrival time. maximum recorded values were: 105 m (a.m.s.l.), 18 m, 5.5 m/s, and, respectively. velocity decreased terrain, which means erosion far reaches study area. indicated depth categorized Catastrophic limits terrain's results offer way predict extent showed potential break at Al-Udhiam will serious, therefore, suitable management needed overcome this risk.
